Time Traveling with Toad

I got to do a bit of time traveling last weekend!

One of my favorite bands in the early-90′s was Toad the Wet Sprocket. The two albums that came out in 1991 and 1994, Fear and Dulcinea, were the kind of CD’s my friends and I listened to from beginning to end. We knew all the words to every song. As soon as one track ended, we’d start humming the next one before it even started playing. Road trip? Not without Toad.

So you can imagine how excited I was to learn that they were coming to one of my favorite clubs in San Francisco to play the full album, Dulcinea, from beginning to end. And the show didn’t disappoint! They sounded fantastic, and after Dulcinea was complete, they played a bunch of songs I love off Fear, including two from the Time Between Us playlist: “Nightingale Song” and “Walk on the Ocean.”

The show ended and our friends and I were getting ready to go home. But then I realized I had my copy of Time Between Us in my car.

Being the total dork that I am, I ran out and grabbed it, just in case. And, I’m glad I did. Because if you hang around long enough after the show, sometimes the band comes out to say hi.

Lead singer, Glen Phillips, and I had a nice little chat about the “Walk on the Ocean” lyrics on page 132. He asked me to pitch him on the story of Time Between Us and seemed intrigued. He admired the cover. And then he signed my book!

“Walk on the Ocean” lyrics, now look complete next to Glen’s kind words.

If you remember Toad the Wet Sprocket, I highly recommend seeing them next time they come to town! And they have a new CD of re-recorded favorites that’s fantastic (I bought it at the show and I’m listening to it as I write this blog post). If you’ve never heard of these guys before, you really should check ‘em out!

I’m so grateful to Glen and the band for their beautiful song, “Walk on the Ocean”. It will always be one of my favorites, and even after all time I spent writing and editing Time Between Us, every time I read the scene where that song plays, I still get chills. Fear and Dulcinea both live on Anna Greene‘s shelf, and I’m just certain that she loves that one particular song as much as I do.

And yes, it’s so nice when the band members are as wonderful in person as their music is.

Thank you for your timeless music, Toad!

Side note: If you’ve always wondered where the name, “Toad the Wet Sprocket” came from, you might enjoy this.

That is so cool! As I mentioned on Twitter, I just read that page in the book last night when I saw Jessica’s tweet. I used to LOVE Toad the Wet Sprocket too, and also played those cds from beginning to end constantly. I still have them. That is so awesome that he signed your book!

    Tamara,

This is an incredible story & the pictures made me smile! I totally had to put on the song on my laptop by the time I got to the bottom of this post. It’s absolutely one of my favorite songs too since I heard it on One Tree Hill a few years ago (I was a little young when it was on MTV/VH1′s rotation LOL). Awesome awesome awesome that you got to meet & show him your book! :)
