Music plays a huge role in both books in the Time Between Us series. My playlists are my inspiration as I write, and in my mind, certain songs are forever linked with specific scenes. For the YA Scavenger Hunt, I thought it would be fun to tell you about the songs on Bennett’s Time After Time playlist, including my favorite lyrics and excerpts from those scenes in the novel.

Also, BIG NEWS: Time After Time will be available in paperback in TWO WEEKS. If you like your books bendy, you can PREORDER here: Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, or IndieBound.

Bennett’s Playlist: 1995-2012

The Neighbourhood – Sweater Weather
Anna wants adventure in her life, and she dreams about getting away from her cold Chicago suburb to find it. Bennett is a time traveler. He can hold Anna’s hands in his and instantly transport her anywhere in the world she wants to go. Could there be a more perfect song for them?

My favorite lines:

Use the sleeves of my sweater let’s have an adventure

Head in the clouds but my gravity’s centered…

‘Cause it’s too cold for you here and now

So let me hold both your hands in the holes of my sweater.

From Time After Time:

Nothing’s changed, but everything’s different now. Because Anna sat here once, right next to me, and handed me a letter that told me I’d meet her someday. I wish she’d warned me that once I had, I wouldn’t quite know how to be here without her.

Angus & Julia Stone – Just A Boy

I love these lyrics. Bennett has a unique gift that makes him unlike anyone else. But in so many ways, he’s just a boy. And when it comes down to it, those of the things Anna loves most about him.

My favorite lines:

One kiss from you and I’m drunk up on your potion. That big old smile is all you wore.

Girl you make me want to feel, things I’ve never felt before.

Did I say I’m just a boy?

From Time After Time:

And just like that first night, she kisses me back, pulling me into her, like she still wants me here and still trusts me with her heart, even though she probably knows by now that she shouldn’t.

The Lumineers – Ho Hey
If Bennett wants to see a concert that took place in 2006, he closes his eyes and opens them in a small club. If he wants to go rock climbing, he closes his eyes and opens them at the base of a granite wall. But Bennett wants to be with Anna in 1995 Illinois, and he can’t be. That’s not going over too well.

My favorite lines:

I’ve been sleeping here instead

I’ve been sleeping in my bed

I belong with you, you belong with me, you’re my sweetheart

From Time After Time:

I flip through channels, stare at the empty space next to me, and wonder how Anna and I are going to pull this off. She should be here right now. Or I should be there. But we shouldn’t be this.

The Raconteurs – Consoler Of The Lonely
This song matches up with a scene at school, when Bennett is trying hard to get back into the rhythm of real life in present day San Francisco. None of his friends know his secret, and it’s getting harder to keep it from them when all he can think about is the next time he gets to go back to 1995.

My favorite lines:

Light bulbs are getting dim, my interests are starting to wane

I’m told it’s everything a man could want, and I shouldn’t complain.

I’m bored to tears.

From Time After Time:

Sam shakes his head and gives me a pitying look. “I swear, man, it’s like you’re back but you’re not.” I avoid his eyes as I spin the combination dial. I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Foo Fighters – On The Mend
I’m a huge Foo Fighters fan and this might be my favorite of all their songs. This is another one I listened to constantly as I wrote Time After Time. These lines give me chills:

My favorite lines:

Wake me when the hour arrives, wake me with my name

See you somewhere down the line, we’re tethered once again.

I’m here, and I’m on the mend.

From Time After Time:

I stay fixed in place on the timeline, avoiding concerts and news, and extinguishing any thoughts that creep in about do-overs. I force myself not to think about Anna every time I meet my friends for coffee, or skate at the park overlooking the bay, or pass a gift shop that sells San Francisco souvenirs and postcards. But every few days, I find myself autopiloting over to the garage, where I pull the Jeep inside its rank-smelling walls and listen to music for a while.

Silversun Pickups – Here We Are (Chancer)
Silversun Pickups are one of my favorite bands. They remind me of a modern-day Smashing Pumpkins, so I feel like they inherently provide a connection between Anna’s 1995 world and Bennett’s present day one. This song lines up with the scene when Bennett decides to surprise Anna by taking her to a city she’s always wanted to see.

My favorite lines:

Here we are, underneath a million leaves

In shadows of compromising scenes…

I’ve got one chance to move you.

From Time After Time:

“Why are you wearing your backpack?” Anna asks. I kiss her again. “Give me your hands.” She’s breathing hard. “Why?” she asks, but doesn’t hesitate for even a second. I can already feel her fingers sliding back down to my waist, feeling for my arms, following the bend in my elbow until they find their home in my hands.

Guster – Satellite

Satellite is such a happy song. What can I say, it just… feels like time traveling to me.

My favorite lines:

Maybe you will always be

Just a little out of reach

From Time After Time:

After she’s taken four or five shots, Anna stops and looks at the camera. I can tell by the way she’s staring at it, running her finger along its edges, that this small cardboard box contains so much more than a few images of the two of us on an undeveloped strip of film. It’s not a memory or a postcard, it’s more than she’s ever had— tangible proof that we exist together, outside both her world and mine

3 Doors Down – When I’m Gone

In Time Between Us, Anna and Bennett spend most of the story together. But in Time After Time, they spend a lot of time apart. It’s the world’s most complicated long-distance relationship, and this is the perfect song for it.

My favorite lines:

Right me when I’m wrong

Hold me when I’m scared

You won’t always be there

So love me when I’m gone.

From Time After Time:

Out of nowhere, it hits me: this is how it’s going to be for the next year. Every few weeks, this is how it will feel to say good-bye to her. What’s worse, every few weeks, for as long as we’re together, this is how it’s going to be. Will we ever get used to this?

Incubus – Wish You Were Here
I’m a huge Incubus fan, and this is one of my very favorite songs. It sounds sad, but if you really listen to the words, it’s not. It’s about being happy and appreciating where you are, even though the person you love isn’t there to share the moment with you. I like that.

My favorite lines:

The world’s a roller coaster and I am not strapped in.

Maybe I should hold with care, but my hands are busy in the air.

From Time After Time:

I sit down on the bench, remove the photo album from my backpack, and flip through the pages. This time, Anna’s here with me.

Green Day – Brain Stew

I played this song whenever I wrote a scene that included Bennett returning from another place and time. Time traveling seems like it’s all fun and games, but the truth is, it hurts. A lot.

My favorite lines:

My mind is set on overdrive

The clock is laughing in my face

On my own… here we go

From Time After Time:

Every time I blink, my eyes feel like they’re on fire, and I can feel the sweat beading up on my forehead. My head is pounding and my mouth feels like it’s full of cotton balls. Everything goes dark.

Tonic – If You Could Only See

Bennett’s parents don’t understand why he feels the need to travel back in time. This song lines up with the scene when he admits that his “do-overs” are a lot more frequent then they have ever suspected.

My favorite lines:

If you could only see the way she loves me

Then maybe you would understand

Why I feel this way about our love

And what I must do

From Time After Time:

Mom looks for something to hold on to but there’s nothing in sight, so she takes two steps back and sits on the edge of the bed. “You go back?” Her lip quivers when she asks, and when I nod, she covers her mouth. “All the time,” I say.

Foo Fighters – Rope

This song fits perfectly with a scene when Bennett is trying to hang onto the life he wants to have with Anna, but feels it slipping from his grasp.

My favorite lines:

This indecision’s got me climbing up the walls

I’ve been cheating gravity and waiting on the falls

Give me some rope I’m coming loose. I’m hanging on you.

From Time After Time:

I twist my pencil back and forth between my fingers, thinking about Anna and the last words I heard her say: “You’re not supposed to be here until Friday.” But I can’t get to Friday. And I can’t get to Wednesday and I can’t get to Thursday either.

Eddie Vedder – Without You

Pearl Jam is a big part of the 1995-set, Time Between Us, but much of Time After Time takes place in present day. I wanted a way to honor Pearl Jam in the second book, while keeping the music more current. When I discovered this song, I listened to it over and over again because… wow. It’s just beautiful.

My favorite lines:

And from afar, I lie awake

Close my eyes to find I’d never be the same

Without you.

From Time After Time:

“Look,” I say. “All I want is a normal relationship with you, and when I’m here, it feels like I have it. But when I’m there… I just miss you. All the time.”

Train – If It’s Love
This is such a fun song, and the lyrics make me smile. Anna and Bennett’s relationship might be incredibly complicated, but they’re determined to find a way to make it work. This song links to a scene when Bennett introduces Anna to his sister, Brooke. I loved writing the three of them together, talking about concerts and time travel.

 My favorite lines:

If it’s love, and we decide that it’s forever

No one else could do it better

If it’s love, and we’re two birds of a feather

Then the rest is just whatever.

From Time After Time:

Brooke starts again, choosing her words more carefully. “Logan and I met at this concert at Red Rocks.” She looks at me for confirmation and I give her an affirmative nod. “He loves music too.” She leans over toward me. “I was dying to tell him that I’d been to Sydney to see a Maroon 5 concert in two thousand eight.”

“Again,” I remind her.

“Oh, right.” She leans closer to Anna and winks. “The lead singer is hot.”

Pearl Jam – Black
I’ve always loved this song, and this is a bit of a tribute to Anna’s 1995 world. This last line just kills me… every time.

My favorite lines:

I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life,

I know you’ll be a sun in somebody else’s sky,

But why, why, why… can’t it be mine?

From Time After Time:

I stood in the entryway, looked around, and sucked in the intoxicating scent of holiday cheer and out-of-town parents. I reminded myself that I didn’t have to genuinely enjoy being at this party; I just had to play the part. Now I’m all smiles and backslaps, quick one-liners and snappy comebacks, acting so out of character of late that when Sam sees me, he shoots me this “Who the hell are you right now” look.

Coldplay – High Speed
This song is Chapter 33. The lyrics are even included in the novel. To this day, every time I see a red Jeep, this is the tune the pops into my head.

My favorite lines:

Can anybody fly this thing?

Before my head explodes,

Or my head starts to ring.

We’ve been living life inside a bubble…

From Time After Time:

Even though it’s winter, I still haven’t put the soft top back on the Jeep. I’ve been driving around a lot this way over the last month: top down, cold wind, tunes loud, heat cranked. “Ooh, good song,” Brooke says, turning up the volume. She reclines the seat back and stares up at the sky. I don’t know what it is. I just drive, listening to the lyrics.

Green Day – Good Riddance [Time Of Your Life]

I always knew this would be the last song on the playlist at the end of the series. Forks in the road, marking major decision points. Photographs and still frames in your mind. Time being in charge, whether you want it to be or not. That amazing line, “For what it’s worth, it was worth all the while.”

And this is probably the most personal song on any of my playlists. Because I’ve had the time of my life writing these two books. I hope Anna and Bennett have made my readers as happy as the two of them have made me.

My favorite lines:

Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road

Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go

So make the best of this test, and don’t ask why

It’s not a question, but a lesson learned in time.

I hope you had the time of your life.

From Time After Time:

I can’t share this scene, or I’d give away the last lines of the novel. 🙂
