Thank you, Jean!
I got to do a bit of time traveling last weekend!
One of my favorite bands in the early-90′s was Toad the Wet Sprocket. The two albums that came out in 1991 and 1994, Fear and Dulcinea, were the kind of CD’s my friends and I listened to from beginning to end. We knew all the words to every song. As soon as one track ended, we’d start humming the next one before it even started playing. Road trip? Not without Toad.
So you can imagine how excited I was to learn that they were coming to one of my favorite clubs in San Francisco to play the full album, Dulcinea, from beginning to end. And the show didn’t disappoint! They sounded fantastic, and after Dulcinea was complete, they played a bunch of songs I love off Fear, including two from the Time Between Us playlist: “Nightingale Song” and “Walk on the Ocean.”
The show ended and our friends and I were getting ready to go home. But then I realized I had my copy of Time Between Us in my car.
Being the total dork that I am, I ran out and grabbed it, just in case. And, I’m glad I did. Because if you hang around long enough after the show, sometimes the band comes out to say hi.
Lead singer, Glen Phillips, and I had a nice little chat about the “Walk on the Ocean” lyrics on page 132. He asked me to pitch him on the story of Time Between Us and seemed intrigued. He admired the cover. And then he signed my book!
If you remember Toad the Wet Sprocket, I highly recommend seeing them next time they come to town! And they have a new CD of re-recorded favorites that’s fantastic (I bought it at the show and I’m listening to it as I write this blog post). If you’ve never heard of these guys before, you really should check ‘em out!
I’m so grateful to Glen and the band for their beautiful song, “Walk on the Ocean”. It will always be one of my favorites, and even after all time I spent writing and editing Time Between Us, every time I read the scene where that song plays, I still get chills. Fear and Dulcinea both live on Anna Greene‘s shelf, and I’m just certain that she loves that one particular song as much as I do.
And yes, it’s so nice when the band members are as wonderful in person as their music is.
Thank you for your timeless music, Toad!
Side note: If you’ve always wondered where the name, “Toad the Wet Sprocket” came from, you might enjoy this.
I love this part! It’s time to announce who won signed copies of Time Between Us!
The two winners of the Goodreads contest for signed copies of the UK Edition are:
Rachael from Masterton, New Zealand
Swarupa from Mumbai, India!
Congratulations, you two! Please drop me an email at tamara AT tamaraistone DOT com if you want me to personalize it for you, or for someone else as a gift.
And after a random drawing, the winner of the the Spanish edition of Time Between Us – El Tiempo Entre Nosotros – is:
Mairena Ruiz from Madrid!
Mairena weighed in on guest blogger, Shona McCarthy’s, post to tell us about her favorite places in the world. Shona and I loved what she had to say:
As a Spanish teenage girl I used to be in love with Paris. Just thinking about visiting it, about getting to go to the Louvre and just walk through its cities made me incredibly excited.
But then I got to go in an expedition through the caribbean and seeing such different places, standing on La Isabela beach at sunrise, was life changing.
A bit later I finally visited Paris and a couple months after that, London. Oh, boy, did I fall in love with London… It had EVERYTHING I had ever wanted, just riding the bus was exciting! I was so sure I wanted to live there…
Until I moved from Valencia to Madrid and I just knew that city was perfect. So much light, such pretty streets, plenty of museums and parks and… I guess that my favorite city or place will always be the next one, I just love getting to know new places and traveling too much!
And you can be sure I’ll be following Shona’s adventures. It sound so exciting!
Thank you for sharing your travel adventures, Mairena! A signed copy of El Tiempo Entre Nosotros is heading your way.
Huge thanks to everyone who entered both contests!
